FYI - Mixed augment nodes, BBSON, and WebSphere Virtual Enterprise
Just a quick FYI. I ran into this today with a customer. If you have WVE installed and have only augmented some of the nodes in your original WebSphere ND cell AND you plan on using BBSON, be aware:
In this setup, WVE will still default back to using the HAManager BulletinBoard implementation rather than using the WVE BBSON implementation. This is due to the system detecting the mixed environment and falling back to the lowest common denominator messaging implementation for the On-Demand Configuration (ODC) data, which is the HAManager BulletinBoard.

Elastic cache beyond the Java heap with IBM eXtremeMemory
This new article on developerWorks talks about some exciting new features possible with the v7.1.1 release of WebSphere eXtreme Scale. Per the abstract:
The 7.1.1 release of IBM® WebSphere® eXtreme Scale introduces an additional in-memory model for elastic caching called IBM eXtremeMemory, which enables you to utilize the system memory outside of the Java™ heap as elastic cache. This allows for smaller Java heap sizes of the WebSphere eXtreme Scale containers and minimizes the effects of garbage collection pauses on transaction response times. Since eXtremeMemory is outside of the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) environment, a new transport called IBM eXtremeIO was developed to facilitate fault tolerance of the eXtremeMemory elastic cache. eXtremeIO enables efficient memory to memory replication between WebSphere eXtreme Scale containers. This article provides an overview of the eXtremeMemory and eXtremeIO features. This content is part of the IBM WebSphere Developer Technical Journal.

Looking at a WebSphere migration?
If you are looking at a WebSphere Application Server migration in the near future, give this presentation from Dana Duffield a read. It covers the differences between different versions of WAS and things to watch out for during your migratory efforts.
I recently picked up a pair of Vibram FiveFingers Bikilas. Overall, I love the shoes and the minimalist attitude of running and fitness. Here are some of my observations on the shoes after wearing them pretty consistently for a week.
- I need to wear Injinji’s when I wear these shoes else my feet stink after a days wear.
- The 7mm of total sole between me and the ground doesn’t feel too bad. More running and activity will tell.
- They are tight. I’m in the right size (40) but I have been dealing with a little pain at the tip of my left big toe where the tightness of the toe pocket pinches the top tip of my nail towards the ground on each step. After a while, the nail gets sore. No bruising.. I’ve resorted to trimming that nail, WAY back (as far as I can and not bleed) and it *seems* to be helping. Jury is still out. *crossed-fingers*
- Heel cup fits perfectly.
- In <40 degree weather with no Injinji’s on, my feet freeze! Your mileage may vary.
Failing to see the value proposition of 4g
I’m fairly new to the Android world, having spent over four years as a Blackberry user. This year, I upgraded to an #Android phone: the Samsung Stratosphere. This was my main choice from the two phone IBM was giving me as options. I chose it specifically because out was the only 4g option, and since I tether frequently for work needs, it seemed like a good choice.
